World Publications CEO Terry Snow has announced the purchase of two of South Florida’s top home design magazines: Home Miami and Home Fort Lauderdale. Acquired from founders John O’Connor and Jim Baxter, the magazines will become part of World’s lifestyle group that includes Saveur, Garden Design and Florida Travel & Life.
“The Home titles will fit perfectly into our existing portfolio of magazines that serve our affluent lifestyle market,” says Snow, whose company publishes more than 20 special-interest magazines. “With these titles’ emphasis on design, architecture and the real estate market, our lifestyle group is now stronger than it has ever been with the opportunity for new advertising synergies.”
The Home magazine acquisitions are the first since World announced its partnership with Sweden-based media group Bonnier in May, intended to fuel an aggressive plan of acquisitions, brand extensions and growth of existing magazines.
All editorial, sales and marketing staffs of Home Miami and Home Fort Lauderdale will remain with the magazines, including O’Connor, who serves as editor-in-chief, and Baxter, the real estate editor. The titles will continue to be headquartered in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Back office operations such as accounting and circulation will be integrated into World’s corporate office in Winter Park, Florida.
Home Miami and Home Fort Lauderdale combined reach more than 200,000 readers with every monthly issue. The magazines examine art, architecture, interior and graphic design, urban renewal and repurposing from a historical and cultural viewpoint.
“Our magazines offer readers coverage of the full spectrum of urban living in unique, sub-tropical environments, the unique South Florida mix of old and new cultures in food, drink, books and entertainment,” says O’Connor. Now with the World deal, expansion of the brand is key. “We will look at other areas in Florida and beyond where architecture and art are flourishing in ways that reflect a new approach to urban living.”
O’Connor and Baxter started the Fort Lauderdale magazine in 2003. Its upscale and educated design and editorial voice attracted a large audience of similar quality, one that advertisers – particularly in real estate – took to immediately. One year later, Home Miami was launched and similarly grew its audience and advertising base quickly. Today the magazines share a portion of editorial content, but each reflects the specific local cultures and urban lifestyles of two very different metropolitan areas.
Regional Media Advisors LLC of Connecticut brokered the deal. “We were pleased to bring these two good companies together,” says Regional Media Advisors’ Kim Mac Leod. “Home Fort Lauderdale and Home Miami have a creative approach to the shelter category of regional titles, and World Publications has the strength and experience to help the titles grow to their full potential.”
World’s magazines have won numerous awards, including the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. With offices in New York City, Florida, California and Rhode Island, World specializes in travel and luxury lifestyle titles.
