Dolan Media Acquires Mississippi Business Journal

VenturePubT-webDolan Media Company has acquired the assets of Mississippi Business Journal, the state’s leading business publication, from Venture Publications, Inc.

The 28-year-old weekly tabloid newspaper has 7,300 circulation across Mississippi and is based in Jackson. The company also publishes the quarterly Construction Mississippi and a dozen other special publications on technology, law, real estate, small business and health care. The company produces the 24-year-old annual Mississippi Business and Technology Expo and also publishes the annual Mississippi Next: A Guide to Life After High School, distributed statewide to 100,000 high school students in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Education.

The company also operates web sites: www.msbusiness.com, www.msnext.comwww.bestplacestoworkinms.com, and a daily news bulletin delivered by email to approximately 1,000 business subscribers.

The transaction was announced jointly by Dolan Media President Jim Dolan and Venture Publications President Joe D. Jones. The deal closed March 30. Purchase price and terms were not disclosed.

Jones said he chose to complete a deal with Dolan Media because of the fit between companies. “Dolan Media shares our values and will continue our tradition of journalistic integrity,” he said, adding “Dolan is committed to the communities it serves and will be an outstanding corporate citizen for our state. The future is bright for both Mississippi and the Mississippi Business Journal.”

Dolan said that Joe Jones had agreed to stay with the company through a transition period. He also announced that effective immediately Ron Jones, the paper’s general manager, would take the additional title of publication director and would be in charge of all of Dolan Media’s Mississippi operations.

Ron Jones will report to D. Mark Singletary, group publisher in charge of Dolan Media’s business publications. Mississippi Business Journal will be part of that newspaper group, which comprises about half of Dolan Media’s publishing operations.

Singletary said the newly acquired operation will retain its staff and will remain in its current offices at 5120 Galaxie Drive in Jackson.

Privately held Dolan Media, based in Minneapolis, is a business-to-business information company with local newspapers and B2B media in 19 markets across the United States. Its business information division has two groups, business publishing and law publishing.
